Our first of six DIY nail art tutorials demos how to create this totally tropical palm tree nail art using household items. Perfect for summer holidays, this design can be done in blue hues for a seascape look or reversed with reds and oranges for a sunset sky. Follow the step-by-step pictures below to create the ombré effect using a sponge and paint palms with a drinks straw. Simple!

Step 1
After you've prepped your nails and applied a base coat, paint two coats of your chosen colour. We used Bourjois So Laque Glossy in Ciel Mon Vernis.
Step 2
Using the corner of a kitchen sponge paint two stripes along one end, one light and one dark. We used Bourjois Bleux Fabuleux and Adora.
Step 3
Dab the sponge along the middle to tip of the nail to create the ombré effect, using the darker colours at the bottom. Clean up using a cotton bud. TIP: Only do one hand at a time as you need the polish to be tacky for the next steps creating the palm tree.
Step 4
To create the palm leave shapes cut a drinks straw, leaving just under half of the width remaining, and dip the tip into a black polish. We used Bourjois Noir de Chine.
Step 5
Press the tip of the straw onto the nail creating three palms on each side, making sure they are smaller at the top and larger at the bottom.
Step 6
Cut the straw even thinner and dip it in the black polish ready to create the tree trunk.
Step 7
Paint a line from the palms to the tip of the nail. It's ok if it goes ridged as they are usually slightly curved in shape. Finish with a top coat to seal the design and blend together your nail art, then repeat on other hand.
